What is PermaChar?

PermaChar® is timber that has undergone fire treatment to preserve it.

The process originated in Japan in the 18th century, primarily as a way to treat cedar cladding to make it weatherproof. The Japanese call it “Yakisugi (焼杉)”. This charring process protects the wood against wind, rain, rot, and insects.

It also substantially extends the natural lifespan of the wood.

The technique involves charring a wood surface to render it a deep charcoal-black. PermaChar® is quickly becoming the go-to option for architects and specifiers looking to create a dramatic, contemporary facade.
