The Technical Process of Charring Timber
Charred timber has become a popular choice in modern architecture, highly admired for its dark finish, rich texture and long-lasting durability. The Yakisugi technique is a traditional Japanese method of preserving wood by carefully charring its surface. You may have also heard of the term ‘Shou Sugi Ban’, although Yakisugi is considered the more accurate name in Japan.
Originally, the process was used to protect timber buildings from harsh weather, insects and decay without relying on chemical treatments. Today, it’s widely used for exterior cladding, garden structures and interior design features because of its beautifully distinctive appearance and practical benefits.
Choosing the Right Timber
The process starts with selecting suitable timber. Softwoods such as cedar and larch are commonly used because they respond well to heat and create attractive grain patterns once charred. At PermaChar, we use A Grade larch because it’s known for its strength, durability and attractive grain. Larch also responds particularly well to charring and has become a favourite for both traditional and modern timber cladding projects.
Its combination of practicality and appearance makes it ideal for exterior applications where timber needs to handle changing weather conditions while still looking impressive year after year. The wood is normally dried beforehand to ensure the burn is even and controlled.
The type of timber plays a big role in the final result. Some woods create deep cracks and dramatic textures, while others produce a smoother, more refined finish. Larch is valued because it offers a good balance between strength and workability. It’s dense enough to provide stability and durability, but still manageable to cut, shape and install.
The Charring Process
Our charring process takes place in a high-tech facility, allowing precise control over both heat and transit speed throughout production. This ensures a consistent, high-quality finish across every board while allowing different levels of charring depending on the desired appearance.
Once prepared, the timber is exposed to intense heat using specialist industrial burners. Modern equipment allows the burn to be carefully controlled, producing anything from lighter, textured finishes to deep black charred surfaces. Heating timber with fire creates a charred outer surface while leaving the core of the wood strong and structurally sound, allowing it to retain its natural properties.
During this stage, the timber undergoes a process known as pyrolysis. This is where heat breaks down the outer wood fibres, leaving behind a protective carbon layer. Rather than damaging the timber, this charred surface helps improve resistance to moisture, insects and weathering while maintaining the strength of the board beneath.
Brushing and Finishing
After the charring process is complete, the timber must be allowed to cool naturally before any finishing work begins. This stage is important because the surface of the wood remains delicate immediately after burning. Allowing the boards to cool fully helps stabilise the charred layer and prevents damage during handling.
Once cooled, the timber moves on to the brushing stage. Brushing removes excess soot, ash and any loose carbon from the surface of the wood. This not only makes the timber cleaner and more durable, but also starts to reveal the character hidden beneath the charred exterior.
The brushing process can dramatically change the final appearance of the timber. A light brushing keeps much of the blackened surface intact, creating a bold finish with a heavily textured feel. This style is often used in contemporary architecture where a dramatic, almost burnt-black appearance is desired.
A more aggressive brushing removes larger amounts of char and exposes more of the natural grain beneath. This creates a softer, more tactile finish with greater contrast between the darkened surface and the timber’s natural tones. In larch, brushing can reveal rich golden browns and textured grain patterns that give the boards a warmer and more organic appearance.No two boards react exactly the same way during brushing, which is part of what gives charred timber its unique character.
The depth of the original burn also plays a major role in the final look. A lighter char allows more of the timber’s natural colour to remain visible, often producing warm brown, silver or dark bronze tones. These finishes tend to feel softer and more natural, making them popular for residential projects and interior applications.
Heavier charring creates the deep black finish most people associate with Yakisugi or charred cladding. The surface can become cracked, textured and highly tactile, adding depth and shadow to the timber. This darker finish is especially popular in modern architecture because it contrasts beautifully with materials like concrete, steel and glass.
The blackened surface is then treated with a specialist oil, helping to enhance both the appearance and protective qualities of the timber.

One of the reasons Yakisugi has become so popular is the balance it offers between appearance and performance. It creates a striking architectural finish while avoiding the need for heavy chemical treatments.
